Mechanical Design Engineer

About the Role:

This position lies within the Technology Exploitation Department and consists of the design, development and production of products originating from the Technology Partnerships (TP) and Vision TriteQ3 teams.

The engineer will be physically located within the Design Department at Vision Engineering, consisting of mechanical and optical engineers, project management and procurement. This position is based at our manufacturing base in Send, Woking and works closely with the Purchasing, Assembly & Machine Shop departments.

The position will involve designing quality products using injection moulded, extruded, cast and machined parts as well and optics, electronics and mechanisms. The position will involve working on projects through all phases of the New Product Introduction (NPI) process.

The role is hands on designing and requires the individual to be a creative and pro-active problem solver, who takes ownership throughout and uses his/her own initiative to resolve design and engineering issues.

Resources within the department include; large laboratory area, dark room, rapid prototyping machines, in house prototype machining and shared knowledge and experience of existing design team.

The position jointly reports to the Technology Exploitation Department Manager (for project tasks) and the Design Manager (for processes, systems, etc).

What you will be doing:

  • Input into technical specifications for TP and TriteQ3 related projects;
  • Estimate work packages for project quoting;
  • Detailed technical design of those projects;
  • Capture design decisions and highlight associated technical risks;
  • Seek and share good working practices to continuously improve skill sets and the overall working of the department;
  • Liaise with external consultants, suppliers, toolmakers, test houses and an internal, onsite assembly department and comprehensive machine shop;
  • Ensure designs meet expected quality and performance requirements;
  • With the aid of project management ensure projects follow the company’s internal NPI process;
  • Compile technical files to show compliance with the CE requirements;
  • Keep abreast of new technologies and sub systems;
  • Work with purchasing and suppliers to ensure designs meet cost constraints.

What we are looking for:

  • Candidates will have a high-level qualification (degree or similar) in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design, or otherwise significant proven track record;
  • The ideal candidate will have a fundamental, solid understanding of mechanical engineering;
  • For purposes of project supervision and efficient integration into our products a strong candidate will also have an appreciation of electronics, electrical assemblies, PCB layout and power requirements;
  • Familiarity of digital imaging technologies and optical design are desirable but not essential;
  • Experience in the design of precision mechanical products involving intricate mechanical assemblies and mechanisms incorporating plastic mouldings, die castings and machined components;
    • Suitable previous experience may include the design of consumer type products such as mobile phones and similar telecoms equipment, printers, copiers, white goods, medical products etc.
  • Experience of tolerance studies, numerical design calculations, FEA and BOM costs is required;
  • Extensive experience of 3D CAD systems is essential, ideally with PTC Creo, although experience with other packages will be considered;
  • Knowledge of relevant analysis tools is also highly desirable;
  • Based in our modern Global HQ in Send, Surrey, candidates must live within a manageable daily commute.

What you will be getting:

This is a full time, permanent position, 40 hours per week – Monday to Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm with half an hour lunch break and flexibility on the start and finish times in line with the Company’s core working hours policy.

  • Additional production bonus (variable but approx. 3% of basic salary payable monthly in arrears); linked to the value of goods invoiced from the UK factory base;
